I Just Want to be a Squash
A student asked the President of his school whether he could not take a shorter course than the one prescribed. ‘Oh yes,’ replied the President, ‘but then it depends upon what you want to be. When God wants to make an oak. He takes a hundred years, but when He wants to make a squash, He takes six months.’
Growth is not a uniform in the tree or in the Christian. In some single months there is more growth than in all the year besides. During the rest of the year, however, there is solidification, without which the green timber would be useless. ~ A.H. Strong
To be completely honest, I don’t always feel like being made into an oak. I don’t want to be strong or go deep. I’m tired of waiting to see any progress, tired of the refinement that’s so slow it’s nearly imperceptible.
Some days I’m content to spread myself a little thin. I’d rather just be a flash in the pan. I just want to grow up enough to be a squash.
It’s one thing to taste God’s grace. It’s an entirely different experience to be rooted in it. So today I choose to be an oak. Today I’m willing to wait, trusting that He who began a good work in me will keep working on it.

SPTP – The sad thing is, I don’t even like squash (except pumpkins, which don’t really count). Some days I have to remind myself that I really love oak trees! Thanks for the prayers!

And in the waiting we are established sister. I hate the “squash days”. I confess I have too many of them. But Jesus is faithful always to bring me back around to the place where I renew my resolve to be “an oak of righteousness a planting of the Lord.” As long as I keep myself in the place of allowing his grace to accomplish it I know I will make it. We who trust Jesus all shall make it! A-men
